RANKRENT THE PLAIN-ENGLISH EXPLAINER

What is rank and rent?

Rank and rent is building a website that ranks in Google for a local service search, then renting the enquiries it produces to a business that wants the work. You own the website the way a landlord owns a shop; the tradie pays rent for the foot traffic. This page explains the whole model honestly, including the parts the sales pitches skip.

How it works, in one example.

Somebody in Caringbah wakes up to a blocked drain and searches "blocked drains Caringbah". A website sits at the top of those results: suburb pages, straight answers about costs, a quote form. The owner of that website is not a plumber. When the enquiry comes in, it goes to a licensed local plumber who pays the website's owner for it, either a flat monthly rent or a price per lead. The homeowner gets their drain fixed, the plumber gets work without running marketing, and the site owner collects rent on an asset they built once.

The craft is in the order of the words: rank comes first. A site that ranks for nothing rents for nothing, which is why most of the real work is picking the right suburb and trade, building something genuinely useful, and earning the position. The renting part is almost the easy bit.

The questions everyone asks.

Q1Is it legal in Australia?+

Building websites and selling leads are both ordinary commerce. What the law polices is honesty: Australian Consumer Law treats your site's content as advertising, so no claims of licences nobody holds, no invented reviews, no "20 years of experience" that belongs to no one. Run it honestly and it is as legal as owning a billboard.

Q2What does it cost to start?+

A .com.au domain is about $22 a year and needs an ABN. Hosting a fast static site can be free. The real costs are time and skill: the research, the build, the content, and the months of patience while rankings form. Anyone quoting you a big setup fee is charging for things you can learn to do.

Q3How is it different from lead generation agencies?+

Same family, different ownership. An agency runs ads and sells leads while being paid to do so; rank and rent builds an organic asset that keeps producing whether or not anyone is paid that month. Slower to start, better to own.

Q4What are the failure modes?+

Picking a territory on hope instead of maths. Never ranking because the trade was too competitive. Ranking but finding no tradie will pay. Forms silently breaking. Sites that lie getting burned by regulators or competitors. All known, all survivable if you see them coming; the method deals with each one.

Q5How much does it earn?+

The only honest answer is: it depends on the trade, the suburb and the tenant, and anyone giving you a confident number is selling something. This site publishes its own portfolio's real figures in the Ledger as they happen, including the current ones: zero, because the portfolio is weeks old.
